NAWOJ Borno Urges Lawmakers to Support Passage of Special Seats Bill

By Elizabeth Ameh, Borno

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Borno State Chapter, joins its voice in support of the Nigeria Women Solidarity March, which took place on February 16, 2026, at the National Assembly, Abuja, in support of the Special Seats Bill (HB1349).

NAWOJ strongly and unequivocally demands the passage of the bill, as it is a rightful demand, not a request for unjust or special favour. It is the right thing in a democratic setting that values and recognizes the role women play in shaping the polity of a nation. This will not only balance the system but also show strong recognition for their contributions to the nation’s polity as the highest voting demographic.

The Special Seats Bill is a necessary step towards achieving gender equality in Nigeria’s governance. Many countries, including Rwanda, South Africa, and India, have implemented quotas or reserved seats for women, recognizing the importance of women’s representation in decision-making.

The bill is not a handout, but a recognition of the critical role women play in shaping society. By providing a platform for women to contribute to governance, the state can address pressing issues like maternal mortality, girl-child education, and economic empowerment.

NAWOJ Borno, therefore, calls on Members of the National Assembly representing Borno State to vote in favour of the bill in the interest of equity and democratic progress. It also calls on the Borno State House of Assembly to show support for the passage of the bill (HB1349), breaking the long-standing cultural norms of women’s political representation.

NAWOJ Borno also calls for the support of the media for sustained programmes, coverage, public engagement, and stakeholder mobilisation until meaningful progress is achieved.
