*Head of Service, Mrs. Jummai Bako, receives Award for Leadership, Workers’ Welfare Reforms
The Kaduna State Government has commended the academic staff of Kaduna State College of Education (COE), Gidan Waya, for their commitment to delivering quality teacher education and producing graduates making an impact across various sectors.
The commendation was delivered by the Head of Service, Mrs. Jummai Bako, during a get-together and awards ceremony organized by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union [COEASU], Gidan Waya Chapter.
Mrs. Bako praised the college for consistently producing distinguished graduates and urged the staff and management to sustain the momentum.
“Your contributions to teacher education in Kaduna State are visible and impactful,” she said. “I encourage you to maintain this tempo of excellence,” she said.
At the event, Mrs. Bako was conferred with the Award of Excellence in Leadership and Transformative Reforms in Workers’ Welfare by COEASU. She thanked the union for the recognition and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving staff welfare and institutional performance.
Earlier in his welcome address, the COEASU Gidan Waya Chairman, Dr. Christopher Nuhu Yerima said the college has 80 PhD holders in various fields of discipline contributing to academic excellence.
He appealed to Governor Uba Sani to review Order 2 of the 65-year retirement policy.
He argued that the conditions for its implementation contradict the College of Education Law of 2018 [as amended], noting that it is inconsistent for teachers in secondary and basic education to retire at 65 without screening, while academic staff in state tertiary institutions are subjected to a screening committee set up by the Ministry of Education.
Dr. Yerima also called for the release of the white papers from the last two visitation panels constituted in the past decade, to enable implementation of their recommendations.
Other requests included the construction of internal road networks at the permanent site, completion of the abandoned administrative block and students’ clinic, and the payment of the outstanding 30% of the CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure.
Representing the Provost, Dr. Ayuba Aku, the Deputy Provost administration Dr. Grace Tabat highlighted the college’s recent achievements, including receiving the JAMB award as the top-performing College of Education in Nigeria for the admission process.
Chairman of the occasion, Associate Prof. Bashir Idris, the Lifidin Jama’a, commended COEASU for fostering a culture of excellence and hard work. He urged award recipients to continue serving humanity with dedication and to inspire others through their conduct.
Awardees at the ceremony included: Mrs. Jummai Bako, Head of Service, Kaduna State;
Elder Ishaya Dary Akau, former Provost of the College,
Arc. Adamu Magaji, Director, General, Kaduna State Facilities Management Agency [KADFAMA], Malam Abdullahi Mohammad, former Acting Provost, Mr. Elisha Bisalla, Registrar of the College as well as other academic staff.
The event was attended by traditional rulers, union leaders, and academic staff .
