US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait” amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.
Trump made the proposal in a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday, claiming that the waterway was now under United States control.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT?” he wrote.
The suggestion comes shortly after Trump proposed another geographical name change, reportedly calling for Lake Ontario to be renamed “Lake America” amid tensions with Canada.
Trump had earlier renamed the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America” after returning to office in January 2025, although Mexico and Canada have not recognised the change.
The US president has also repeatedly threatened in recent weeks to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz, including sharing a map portraying the waterway as a new US territory.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, with a significant portion of global crude oil supplies passing through the narrow waterway.
Tensions around the strait have intensified amid the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran, with Iran accused of restricting passage through the strategic chokepoint.
Oil prices have also risen following fresh US military strikes near the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. Trump said the strikes were carried out in response to what he described as new Iranian efforts to lay mines in the waterway.
The latest development has heightened concerns over global energy supplies and the potential impact of prolonged disruption around the strategic oil route.
