US President Donald Trump has rejected calls for international supervision of artificial intelligence, describing efforts to regulate the technology globally as a “globalist scheme”.
Trump made the position known on Tuesday while addressing the United Nations General Assembly.
The US president argued against placing artificial intelligence under international regulatory control, signalling Washington’s opposition to efforts aimed at establishing a global framework for supervising the development and use of the technology.
During his address, Trump also announced a change in the terminology the US government would use in referring to artificial intelligence.
He said the US would henceforth use the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” in official communications, expressing hope that other countries would adopt the terminology.
The development comes amid growing international debate over how governments should regulate the rapid development of AI, particularly over issues relating to safety, security, innovation and the potential impact of the technology on society.
Trump’s position places the United States against calls for a stronger international framework for regulating the emerging technology.
