The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu has warned Corps members to stay away from partisan politics as the 2027 general election is approaching.
Nafiu issued the warning while addressing corps members of the 2026 Batch A, Stream 2, at the temporary NYSC orientation camp in Gusau on Wednesday.
“You know the 2027 general elections is around the corner, you are going to be engaged on election duties by INEC as adhoc staff.
“You should try as much as possible to be good ambassadors of the NYSC and Nigeria anytime you are called upon to serve as electoral officers.
“You should avoid using social media on political issues, your duties as corps members is to promote national unity and cohesion,” Nafiu said.
The NYSC DG urged corps members to continue to remain law-abiding citizens and always work to contribute to the development of the nation.
He also urged corps members to use the lessons learnt during the three weeks orientation course after the service year.
He said the major lessons learnt in the camp to include peaceful coexistence, national unity and development.
He assured the Federal Government’s commitment to prioritising the welfare and security of corps members.
Nafiu urged corps members to remain law-abiding citizens and always work to contribute to the development of the nation.
He charged corps members to be serious on Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED).
He noted that the SAED programme was established in the NYSC scheme to provide various opportunities for corps members to learn various empowerment skills.
“You should therefore benefit from various opportunities in SAED,” he added.
Nafiu called on corps members to focus on savings and financial management and for their future economic empowerment.
“You should learn how to get multiple sources of income for your future, you need to avoid unnecessary spendings.
“You should learn how to establish businesses so that you will not depend on government work after your service year,” he explained.
Nafiu also called on corps members to respect the culture of their host communities.
“Try to be good to Zamfara people as your host, you should respect their culture,” he explained.
Earlier in a welcome address, the State Coordinator of the NYSC, Malam Muhammad Lawan Ahmad said over 500 members registered under the 2026 Batch A, Stream 2 orientation course.
“All the corps members under this batch are in high spirit, they have been generally well behaved and they are fully compliant with camp rules and regulations.
“We have high level of cooperation and understanding, synergy and teamwork with security agencies and other stakeholders.
“I am happy to inform our DG that the Zamfara state government has approved the establishment of NYSC permanent orientation camp in Gusau, the state capital,” the Coordinator said.
In a vote of thanks on behalf of the corps members in the camp, a corps member, Pamela Ayuba commended the DG for the visit to Zamfara.
Ayuba also commended the NYSC scheme for providing an enabling environment for the orientation course.
“We really enjoy this orientation camp, we learned a lot of activities for the development of our lives, especially the SAED programme.
