The new Emir of Gumel has been announced. He is Dr. Lawan Ahmed Sani, the 17 Emir who until his ascending the throne served as Chiroman Gumel and District Head, who coordinate and participating in the affairs of the Gumel Emirate Council. These responsibilities gave him direct experience of traditional administration, community relations, consultation, mediation, and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the Emirate.
Announcing the new Emir, Dr. Lawan Ahmed Sani during a press conference at the JigawA NUJ Secretariat the SSG, Hon. Bala Ibrahim said Dr. Sani was the 17 Emir who until his new elevation was the Chiroman Gumel (Gumel District Head).
Raised in Gumel within the royal household, Dr. Lawan grew up immersed in the traditions, values, and responsibilities of the Emirate, shaped by a deep devotion to Islam and a steadfast commitment to its teachings of faith, knowledge, humility, justice, and service to humanity. His formative education in Gumel was strengthened by this spiritual foundation before he proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and later pursued advanced studies abroad, including postgraduate and doctoral training in Malaysia.
His academic journey took him into the fields of mathematics, computer science, information systems, and cybersecurity, reflecting his belief in the Islamic values of learning, discipline, and the pursuit of beneficial knowledge. His emergence as the 17th Emir of Gumel, follows the passing of his revered father, HRH Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Sani II, the 16th Emir of Gumel, on 3 September 2026, marks not only a moment of royal succession but also a profound turning point in the enduring story of the Gumel Emirate. It is a moment wrapped in remembrance, responsibility, and renewed hope; a solemn passage from a treasured legacy to a future shaped by faith, wisdom, scholarship, and service.
His professional career reflects an equally broad experience. He served in academia in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia, gaining international exposure to teaching, research, and institutional leadership, before returning to Nigeria and joining the Federal University Dutse. His subsequent career at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) placed him at the center of Nigeria’s evolving digital and cybersecurity landscape.
He stands out as royal by heritage, Gumel by upbringing, scholarly by training, global by exposure, technological by profession, traditional by service, and humble by character; a rare blend of intellect, faith, simplicity, and people-centered leadership that sets him apart for this historic responsibility.
His appointment is therefore far more than a royal succession; it is a defining moment that presents him as a living bridge between the timeless values of the Gumel Emirate and the bold possibilities of a fast-changing modern world.
