Nigeria and the United States have held a closed-door meeting at the US Permanent Mission to the United Nations as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to address Nigeria’s classification as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC).
The meeting focused on Nigeria’s position on the classification and efforts to secure its removal from the United States’ CPC list.
Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, described the engagement as positive and constructive.
Ibrahim also expressed appreciation to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Michael Waltz, for the reception and hospitality extended to the Nigerian delegation.
The meeting comes amid continued diplomatic discussions between Nigeria and the United States over issues relating to religious freedom, human rights and Nigeria’s international standing.
The CPC designation is used by the United States in connection with countries it considers to have engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom.
The latest engagement underscores ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen diplomatic dialogue and address areas of concern surrounding Nigeria’s designation.
