The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has affirmed Dr Mustapha Abdullahi as president of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for the 2026-2030 tenure.
FIBA secretary-general, Andreas Zagklis, conveyed the federation’s position in a recognition letter dated October 19, 2026, addressed to Abdullahi, in which he congratulated the new president and other members of the newly elected board.
Zagklis said the recognition followed the outcome of the NBBF elective congress held on October 15, 2026, which was conducted in line with the federation’s constitution and the statutes of the world basketball governing body.
He said FIBA remains committed to the principles of good governance and transparent electoral processes in all its member federations.
The world body also commended the contributions of the outgoing board led by Engr Ahmadu Musa Kida to the development of basketball in Nigeria.
Abdullahi’s emergence is expected to usher in reforms aimed at repositioning Nigerian basketball through improved administration, grassroots development and stronger domestic leagues, as well as enhanced welfare for athletes.
The new board is also expected to consolidate on existing structures while strengthening the competitiveness of national teams in continental and international competitions.
