The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria, FTAN Kaduna State Council, has commended the Senate for passing the State Police Bill, calling it a “landmark” step for security and tourism growth in the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday, FTAN Kaduna State Coordinator Dr. Tobi Bernard Thomas said, the constitutional amendment, which moves policing from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List, directly addresses safety concerns affecting travelers and investors.
“The decentralization of our policing architecture is a long-overdue strategic reform. This would enable states to operate their own police services alongside federal formations,” Thomas said.
He further explained that the police if actualized would create a framework for localized and intelligence-driven security across the country.
According to the tourism expert, “in Kaduna, this shift will be instrumental in securing the ‘Safe Corridors’ essential for our hospitality infrastructure and cultural assets.”
He also aligned the council with Governor Uba Sani’s approach to security, noting that the governor’s steadfast commitment to the rule of law has already begun to reshape our security outlook.
FTAN Kaduna highlighted that the bill includes safeguards against abuse through clear regulatory frameworks and professional oversight commissions for state police forces.
The Council therefore urged the Kaduna State House of Assembly to prioritize ratification once the bill is transmitted.
“A secure Kaduna is the bedrock of a thriving tourism economy. We remain dedicated to partnering with the state government to ensure these new policing structures enhance visitor’s safety, investor’s confidence, and overall growth of our hospitality sector.
“The tourism sector in Kaduna relies heavily on domestic and international travel, making security a core driver of investment and visitor’s confidence,” Thomas explained.
